Neglect and Abuse

A neglect and abuse case happens when New York City’s child protective agency (called the Administration for Children’s Services, or ACS) has evidence that a child is being neglected or abused at home. ACS will begin a court case to see if the child should continue to live at home. If ACS doesn’t think the child should live at home anymore, the child must live with someone else.

“Neglect” and “Abuse” are defined by the Family Court Act of the State of New York. See the link below entitled “Legal Definitions of Neglect and Abuse” for more information.
